Taranto

The Co-Cathedral of the Great Mother of God in Taranto, designed by the renowned architect and designer Gio Ponti, is considered one of the most iconic works of 20th-century Italian architecture. Inaugurated on December 6, 1970, the church stands out for its innovative design, which harmoniously blends traditional elements with modern forms. The main façade, featuring a perforated structure reminiscent of a sail, symbolizes the profound connection between the city of Taranto and the sea. The interior, spacious and filled with natural light, is designed to accommodate a large congregation, reflecting the concept of an open and inclusive church. The Co-Cathedral embodies a perfect synthesis of functionality and symbolism, showcasing Ponti's vision of architecture as a dialogue with the surrounding environment and the community.
