Taranto

The Cathedral of San Cataldo in Taranto, initially dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene and later to the city's patron saint and bishop, is the oldest cathedral in Puglia. Its construction dates back to the 10th century during the Byzantine period, and over the centuries, it has undergone numerous modifications and restorations that have enriched its architecture. The Baroque façade, completed in 1713 and designed by architect Mauro Manieri, features statues of saints and intricate decorations. Inside, the cathedral preserves Romanesque elements, such as columns and capitals, and houses the Cappellone di San Cataldo, a remarkable example of Baroque art. The layering of architectural styles reflects the rich history and cultural and religious significance of the cathedral within the context of Taranto.
