Taranto

The Spartan Hypogeum Museum (MISpa), also known as the Bellacicco Hypogeum, is one of Taranto's main historical attractions, located at number 39 of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, in the city's Borgo Antico. The underground section offers visitors a journey through over 2,700 years of history, from the Spartan foundation of Taranto in 706 BC to the 17th century, when the Palazzo de Beaumont Bonelli was built above. The hypogeum extends over approximately 800 square meters, reaching a depth of 16 meters below street level and 4 meters below sea level. Inside, it is possible to admire wall structures from different eras, including remains of the city walls of Greek Taranto, "opus incertum" buildings from the medieval period and blocks of calcarenite dating back to the Spartan era. The museum also houses modern works of art and historical reproductions of ancient Taranto. According to available information, the Spartan Hypogeum Museum is the third most visited historical structure in Taranto, after the Aragonese Castle and the National Archaeological Museum (MarTa).
